Em 1946, Pero de Magalhães volta a suscitar a atenção do público estu¬dioso não porque um historiador viesse trazer novos subsídios de interpretação a seu Tr atado da Terra do Brasil ou História da Província Santa Cruz, ou um filólogo focalizasse aspectos de seus opúsculos gramaticais. A razão era tão somente a questão de pôr em dúvida o tradicional uso de se proferir como paroxítono -Gandavo - o último elemento aposto ao nome próprio daquele que Barbosa Machado considerara "insigne humanista e excelente latino", na¬tural de Braga e dos primeiros apaixonados do Brasil.
