Abstract

The aim of this paper is to provide an approach to the historiography of languages that addresses the role of translations of oral and written texts in the processes of consolidation, standardization, and language variation and change. Therefore, it is argued in favor of an interdisciplinary dialogue between three fields of knowledge: Historical Linguistics, Sociolinguistics and Translation Studies. As an illustration of this proposal, we discuss three cases of translation involving intercultural relations with linguistic, discursive and political effects: the translations of Afonso II’s will, the Bible translation by Martin Luther and the religious translations in colonial Brazil.
