This work aims to establish a connection between assumptions from the Generative Theory by Noam Chomsky (from 1957) and concepts related to it and teaching of Portuguese and verify how such assumptions may contribute to a greater understanding of linguistic phenomena by teachers. To analyze the contributions generativists, analyzes the works of Chomsky (1981, 2006), VanPatten (2003) and Kato (2005). The research seeks to expand the understanding of teachers about various phenomena, eg, differences between speech and writing, features of human language and the role of input and output for the learning of writing.
