Abstract

Historiography of linguistics is the study of the history of linguistic thought. This history has two faces: an internal face (= its content) and an external face (= its context). The internal face is constituted by reflections and practices dealing with languages: basically, we are dealing with a “technical matter” the object of which is language and languages. This technical matter is defined by the conjunction and succession of means of action and analytical tools; the field comprises three dimensions: (a) an apprehensive dimension; (b) a fashioning dimension; (c) an applicative dimension. The apprehensive dimension includes reflections on various aspects of languages (their nature, function, role, etc.); these reflections are very often ideologically coloured. The fashioning dimension – the calibration – consists in handling language data so that they can be dealt with in a workable way. The applicative dimension gives way to derived products; more specifically, these are in most cases didactically oriented products. The calibration is intended to yield tools. Within the global operation of calibration, one can distinguish five (types of) ‘sub-operations”: (i) denomination; (ii) caracterisation, (iii) segmentation, (iv) categorisation, (v) establishing of relationships and hierarchisation. The technical matter studied by the historiographer of linguistics is the result of a (relative) conditioning by the « substance » (= the language data) and the activity of calibration. The history of the technical matter bears witness to phenomena such as inertia (= conservativism), adaptation and innovation. The historiography of linguistics documents and analyses the history of a technique at a second degree: the metalinguistic technique applied to the technique of language/ speech.

Pierre Swigge rs est Directeur de recherche au FWO belge (Fonds flamand de la recherche scientifique) et professeur de linguistique générale et romane aux universités de Leuven (KULeuven) et de Liège (ULiège). Il a publié dans divers domaines : historiographie et épistémologie de la linguistique, linguistique descriptive et historico-comparative, philosophie du langage, sémiotique. En historiographie de la linguistique, il s’est intéressé à des questions de « métahistoriographie », à l’évolution des conceptions et des pratiques en grammaticographie et en lexicographie, à l’histoire de la terminologie linguistique, à l’insertion culturelle et idéologique de concepts et de démarches linguistiques.
