Abstract
A primeira metade do séc. XX, especialmente nos anos que antecede¬ram e sucederam as duas Grandes Guerras, foi sacudida por uma revoada de peripécias intelectuais, ainda que algumas delas não tivessem sido fruto das contingências históricas: em 1915, Heinrich Wõlfflin, na linha de seu trabalho inicial de 1888 sobre a Renascença e o Barroco, culmina a sua interpretação das duas artes com a publicação de Conceitos fundamentais na história da arte; como partisse de uma visão puramente estilística, formalista do fenômeno barroco, inclusive privilegiando quase exclusivamente a arte italiana, acabou por suscitar o surgimento de outra obra, não menos extraordinária [...]
