The aim of this work is to observe some aspects of the impact of the Grammaire Générale et Raisonnée of Port-Royal (1660) on the treatment of syntax of Brazilians Portuguese grammars of the nineteenth century, through the analysis of four works of this century, namely: Morais Silva (1806), Sotero dos Reis (1866), Julio Ribeiro (1881) and Maciel (1902[1894]). The definition of ‘sentence’ is the object of comparing the grammar of Port-Royal and Brazilians grammars, whereas the Grammaire defines sentence as a judgement, in its holistc aspect, and as a union of a Subject and a Predicate by a copule, in its analytical aspect.
