Abstract

The aim of this text is to identify and describe the Latin words that were the origin of the word “como” (how) in modern Brazilian Portuguese. To do that, some concepts of functional linguistics and current grammaticalization are considered. The corpus is made of two Latin conjunctions: quom > cum e ut; and two adverbs: qui and quomodo. The subordinating conjunction of cause “como” has its origin in the Latin conjunction cum < quom and the Latin interrogative adverb qui remains an interrogative adverb in Portuguese, while the adverb quomodo > como, nowadays, is becoming a preposition. With that, it is verified that in current Portuguese there are four ‘oficial’ words “como” used simultaneously.
