#Edaí: a study on impoliteness and stance-taking on Brazilian Twitter

The aim of this study is to examine # edaí, as employed in April / May 2020, in the light of the Theory of Impoliteness (Culpeper, Haugh & Kádár, 2017), and the Theory of Posture (Debois, 2007; Evans, 2016). The data were collected from Twitter, in the profiles of the three most widely circulated newspapers in Brazil. The results showed that # edaí served to create social bonds, and to form a community of practice (Mills, 2002), as well as to express political stance and linguistic impoliteness, more particularly, via sarcasm and mockery.
