At the beginning of the 1840s Marcellin Jobard, a Belgian industrialist of French origin, proposed a series of new typographical symbols that could serve for signalling feelings (such as irony, irritation, satisfaction) and for indicating voice modulations. His proposals, which to some extent prefigure modern innovations made possible by the use of fonts available in specific software, were intended to bridge the gap between the written/printed text and oral production. Jobard’s ideas, which did not obtain immediate success, fitted within a project of hermeneutic transparency, within a semiotic program of assuring continuity between the oral and the written circuit, and reflected a concern for economy, as can be seen from his use of a reduced series of graphical forms rotated in different senses. Of particular interest, from the point of view of linguistic pragmatics, is Jobard’s proposal to develop typographical markings in order to distinguish the various (il)locutionary instances.
