This article, segment of the book Traços gerais de linguística (1880), is the first contribution of a Brazilian linguist to the study of language processing in the human brain. In it are exposed the predominant theses by the middle of the 19th century, based on the advances of biology and physicochemistry, which already managed to place the faculty of speech in a certain sector of the brain. The text also has a unique historiographic value for being the inaugural work of theoretical linguistics published in Brazil.Downloads
