This article analyzes the contributions of Celso Cunha to Brazilian Creole studies, situating him within the field’s historiography and highlighting his pioneering role. Cunha was familiar with and drew on the works of the first generation of Creole language scholars, such as Adolfo Coelho, Hugo Schuchardt, and Derk Christian Hesseling, incorporating their ideas into reflections on the description and valorization of Creole languages. Although he did not conduct fieldwork, Cunha critically examined the existing literature and articulated concepts of language, nation, and education, emphasizing the importance of the recognition and appreciation of Creoles. His reading of these authors, combined with his training as a linguist in a former colony, provided originality to his perspective, positioning him as a precursor of theoretical reflection on Creoles in Brazil. This study highlights his relevance to the historiography of Brazilian Creole studies.
