The accuracy of the spelling of occlusive phonemes in the writing by 1st-to-3rd-grade children was investigated, considering its relationship with syllabic structure and school grade level. Narrative texts were analyzed to examine the representation of occlusive consonants in the two syllabic positions they occupy in Brazilian Portuguese: simple onset and the first position of complex onset. The results showed a predominance of conventional spellings in the simple onset position, indicating that syllabic complexity affects spelling performance. Regarding grade level, an increase in correct spellings was observed over the years, although errors did not decrease in a linear fashion. Thus, the spelling patterns observed were shown to be related to the phonological structure of the language. The findings also indicated that school progression contributes to the stabilization of spelling, albeit not linearly. These results may offer theoretical support for understanding non-conventional spellings in the context of literacy acquisition.
