The place of the formative participle of the ‘passive’ in the set of word classes is controversial, as reflected in its own designation – participle – a form whose grammatical features reveal the ‘participation’ of verb and adjective features. Some of the traditional justifications for including inflectional ‘in –do’ forms in the verb paradigm (e.g. attributive function and argument selection with the semantic role of the patient) also apply to most ‘in –vel’ forms (aplicável, consumível), but this does not mean that the classification of these forms as true adjectives is controversial. In fact, the alleged ‘verb nature’ that supports the retention of the variable participle in the ‘verb’ class is highly present in verbal adjectives in -vel. This article revisits this controversy and supports the proposal to group the two in the same class: adjective.
