Manuel Pacheco da Silva Júnior, naturalist linguistic, language as a biological attribute of manAbstract
The text, originally published in A Escola: Revista Brasileira de Educação (Rio de Janeiro: Serafim José Alves Editor, v. 2, 1877, p. 73-77) synthesizes the dominant linguistic thought in the second half of the 19th century based on naturalist linguistic. According to this paradigm, language should be investigated with the same methodology and according to the same principles that governed the investigation of living beings. The article presents the foundations of evolutionism and natural selection applied to the analysis of natural languages, with a strong historicist component in the conception of language as a biological attribute of man.
