This study aimed to discuss the attribution of authorship of chapter titles of the work Peregrinação, by Fernão Mendes Pinto. From a theoretical point of view, the adopted concept of authorship was a series of functions performed during the creation of the work, based on Love (2002). From a methodological point of view, a comparison was made between four corpora (chapter titles of Peregrinação, chapter texts of Peregrinação, letters and information in Portuguese by Fernão Mendes Pinto and two works by Francisco de Andrade). It was tested the hypothesis that Francisco de Andrade was the author of the chapter titles of Peregrinação, based on Maldonado (1620). Internal evidence was found that Pinto wrote titles, but internal evidence of Andrade’s presence in those titles was also identified. The final interpretation proposed for the case is that Fernão Mendes Pinto himself wrote and inserted titles in his work, but only after finishing the text of it, and Andrade did make interventions in the titles.
